Real Outdoor Entertaining
What began as a flagstone patio in Stacy Shamblin's backyard
became a unique project that added usable space to his home, outside!
After laying Oklahoma flagstone to create a 700-square-foot patio and curved pathway leading to his back door, Shamblin decided to put his years of experience in hardscaping others' backyards to work for himself. As owner of Archadeck of Austin, he has experience designing and building custom decks, porches, sunrooms, pergolas, walkways and docks, but nothing quite like the outside room he designed in his own backyard.
S hamblin transformed his space into an outdoor room, complete with curving dry
stack stone walls that create a circular "room." A higher wall on one side provides privacy as well as space for a waterproof television and a wood-burning fireplace. The TV is recessed into the wall and bolted shut behind mesquite wood doors accented with antique-looking wrought iron strap hinges.
A lower curved wall on the opposite side completes the circular feel and has 30 linear feet of bench seating. Shamblin used Archadeck's masons and carpenters to build the "round room" as a prototype for future customer installations. In addition, he outfitted the room with electrical outlets for blenders and other party accoutrements and included lights in the circular benches.
"There have been so many outdoor kitchens built recently, but I have never seen an outdoor living and entertaining room like this," says Shamblin. "The goal was to provide a place for entertaining that extends the capabilities of the interior of the home. The design is in keeping with the Old World style and Tuscan Mediterranean feel of my home. Just 40 feet from my back door is a private entertainment area for my family and close friends," he says.
S ome of those close friends are singers and songwriters, so Shamblin ensured his design creates a stage atmosphere. Additional lights mounted in the trees shine down on the wall and fireplace to create an intimate setting.
T he transformation was completed in about three weeks. "This look could be
replicated anywhere," Shamblin says. His prototype is a starting place for homeowners to imagine their perfect after-office retreat.
